TRIO Student Support Services

The TRIO Student Support Services program provides help to low-income, disabled or first-generation college students achieve a college education.

TRIO Studen​t Support Services (SSS) is a grant-funded academic support program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Malcolm X College TRIO SSS is funded to support 160 students each academic year. ​TRIO SSS staff supports students as they achieve their academic goals, including persisting in college, maintaining good academic standing, graduating, and transferring to a four-year college or university.                                             

Services 
TRIO SSS students have access to individual appointments and group workshops. Students are encouraged to meet and communicate frequently with TRIO SSS staff throughout the term. Students should plan to meet with TRIO SSS staff at least once per month to discuss academic progress in coursework, degree and transfer planning, personal concerns, and financial aid. 
 
Advising
  • Holistic advising to support in students in their academic, professional, and personal goals 
  • Priority registration for courses
  • Creation of an individualized Success Plan
  • Assistance with course selection toward transfer and graduation
 
Tutoring
  • Study skills tutoring
  • Academic skills workshops
  • Group study sessions
  • Individualized tutoring plans to support your academics 
 
Financial Aid 
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) support 
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) advising 
  • Assistance with scholarship applications 
  • Financial literacy workshops 
 
Transfer
  • Support with identifying transfer schools
  • Transfer application assistance 
  • Financial aid award letter review 
 
Clinical Counseling
  • Emotional support from a dedicated Clinical Counselor
  • Wellness focused workshops 

 

Eligibility
A student is eligible to participate in TRIO SSS if the student meets all of the following requirements:
  • Identifies as one of the following:
    • A low income student
    • A first-generation college student (neither parent has a four-year college degree); or
    • A student with a documented disability
  • Is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student, at Malcolm X College 
  • Is a citizen or national of the U.S.
  • Demonstrates a need for academic support
 
Application Process
TRIO SSS accepts applications year round, while space is available. Students can apply by filling out the MXC TRIO SSS Application. Application packets can also be picked up from our TRIO Suite 1405.
