The Hawks Market is Malcolm X College's FREE on-campus food pantry. The Hawks Market offers shelf-stable groceries, produce and some home goods & personal goods to all currently registered Malcolm X College students. All items are available to students at no cost. Availability of certain items may vary based on donations. The market is stocked with items donated by the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD).
Who can shop at the Hawks Market? 
All currently registered Malcolm X College students may shop TWICE per month (just not twice within the same week).
 
 
When & where can I access the Hawks Market?  
Location:
Room 2200 (on the 2nd floor, take elevator #6 by the Athletics department)
 
Hours of Operation:
Wednesdays: 9:30AM – 12:30PM & Thursdays: 1 PM – 4PM
 
 
What do I need to shop at the Hawks Fresh Market?  
  • Your MXC student ID card
  • Your GCFD Client ID number

You must provide both IDs every time you shop.

Is it your first time shopping at the Hawks Market? 
Before your first visit, you’ll be required to complete a one-time Client Enrollment with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). If you have not created a Link2Feed account with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, please follow the below steps.
Have you shopped at the Hawks Market previously?
If you believe you already have a Client ID number with GCFD — We’ll look up your GCFD Client ID by your date of birth, but you will need to bring your MXC ID card. 
 

Call for Volunteers — Volunteers may take home groceries after volunteering!

Are you interested in volunteering? Staff, faculty & students are all welcome to volunteer at the Hawks Market. If you can commit to 1 hour, please sign up. Volunteers are welcome to take home groceries after volunteering for a minimum of 1 hour. Please see our link to sign up & volunteer below:

Volunteer Roles
Within our Sign Up Genius, you’ll see 3 kinds of volunteer roles, Fresh Market Operations Volunteer, Fresh Market Day Volunteer & Meals to Go Volunteer:

Fresh Market Operations Volunteer — Volunteer duties include:

  • Assisting students with shopping
  • Packing produce into grab & go bags
  • Making emergency bags for students
  • Setting up tables with supplies
  • Opening boxes and restocking shelves.
  • Volunteer should expect to lift up to 25 lbs., open boxes & cut plastic wrap.

Fresh Market Delivery Day Volunteers — Volunteer duties include:

  • Unloading pallets of food from elevator #6 onto
  • Removing plastic shrink wrap
  • Opening boxes & setting up supplies
  • Volunteers should expect to lift up to 40 lbs.

Meals to Go Volunteer — Volunteer duties include: 

  • Check students into the Meals to Go program
  • Distributing meals & snacks to students
    • Training on Meals/Snacks to Go operations will be provided when you arrive for your volunteer shift

Important Notes

  • Hawks Market volunteers duties will be executed in room 2200, on the second floor from elevator #6.
  • Meals to Go volunteer duties will be executed in room 1005, on the first floor by the Jackson entrance.
  • Volunteers will need to sign a waiver prior to volunteering
  • All volunteers should wear comfortable clothes & shoe
