Guide: Applying to the Malcolm X College Paramedic Program
This guide outlines the steps to apply for the Paramedic Advanced Certificate (AC) or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) programs at Malcolm X College(MXC).
Step 1: Initial Documentation & Eligibility
Before your application can move forward, you must upload several key documents to your portal.
Ensure you have the following ready:
- Identification: A valid State ID or Driver’s License.
- Certification: Your current EMT license.
- CPR Card: A valid American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR card.
- Transcripts: Ensure all official transcripts have been received by the college.
Step 2: GPA Calculation
Once all documents are received, an advisor will review your transcripts to calculate your GPA.
Requirement: You must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher to proceed to the next stage of the application process.
Step 3: Complete the Document Packet
If you meet the GPA requirement, and have all the initial documents submitted, you will receive an email containing a Document Packet.
This packet is essential and includes:
- Three (3) Scored References: You must submit three references.
- Note: These must be completed using the specific forms provided in the packet, as they are part of your application score.
- Personal Essay: You are required to write an essay detailing why you want to become a paramedic and why you chose the program at MXC. Specific instructions and prompts are included in your packet.
- Checklist – Review the checklist to make sure you have everything submitted and completed. Be sure to read and sign the submission consenting to a drug screen and attesting if you ever had a felony conviction at the bottom of the checklist, scan as a PDF, and include the checklist with all supporting documents.
- Verification of Field Experience Form – Submit this form if you have filed experience on an
ambulance, or as tech in the ER or immediate care center. - Proof of Degree – If you have a degree upload your diploma or unofficial transcripts showing that you have been conferred.
Step 4: Program Entrance Exam
- Schedule to take the exam – You will receive a communication via your CCC email once the test is open. The program typically conducts the exam in mid to late April, an EMT refresher course is normally offered in March/April.
Step 5: Program Interview
- Schedule for the Interview – If you score a 75% or better on the exam you will receive an email with instructions to schedule an interview.
Important Notes for Applicants
- Email: All communication goes through your CCC student email, so check it frequently.
- Automated Notifications: You may receive frequent "push notifications" or automated emails reminding you to complete your application. Do not worry about these. They are sent automatically and will continue until the entire process—including your interview—is finalized.
- Stay Proactive: Monitor your email closely for the document packet once your transcripts are verified.
