Process for Developing/Revising ISLOs
Institutional Student Learning Outcomes are revised based on recommendations from the Assessment of Student Learning Committee and are developed through institutional input. Academic divisions align ISLOs with their assessment plans and processes as appropriate for their subject areas. Identified co-curricular events measure participants’ attainment of ISLOs. These data are reviewed by the Assessment of Student Learning Committee and co-curricular leadership, and the results are shared college-wide.
Assessment Plans
Divisions collaborate to create an assessment plan (DAP) that outlines how assessments will be conducted and how results will be reviewed to ensure ongoing, consistent assessment practices. Divisional plans are peer-reviewed by the Assessment of Student Learning Committee and are available on the Assessment of Student Learning Committee SharePoint site.
Responsible Office
The Assessment of Student Learning Committee leads college-wide assessment through the collaborative efforts of faculty, staff, and administrators representing multiple disciplines and departments. The Committee encourages the intentional measurement of student learning in order to drive data-informed, reflective decision-making about classroom instruction, academic programs, and co-curricular initiatives. We do this through professional development, systematic reporting, and honest conversations in an effort to hold ourselves and the entire campus community accountable for the advancement of teaching and learning.
- Assessment of Student Learning Committee Charter
The Assessment of Student Learning Committee receives support and oversight from the following positions:
- Dr. Nicholas Hryhorczuk, VP of Institutional Effectiveness
- Dr. Patrick Davis, Mathematics Instructor (Co-Chair)
- Jillian Manzer, Executive Director of Assessment & Evaluation (Co-Chair)
Each committee member has one vote. The committee strives to reach consensus whenever possible. When a vote is required, decisions are made by a simple majority vote. If appropriate, voting may be conducted electronically and distributed to all committee members. Votes submitted electronically will be included in the final tally.
Student Involvement
Students participate in assessment through a variety of surveys, classroom feedback, and collaboration between the Assessment of Student Learning Committee and Student Government Association.
Technology Infrastructure
Malcolm X Faculty have access to the learning management system, Brightspace for curricular assessment. Training and support is available at the district-level on the built-in assessment tools, including rubrics, quizzes, and outcomes.
Assessment of Student Learning Data and Reports
Assessment Reports
- Annual or semesterly Findings Reports submitted by academic divisions are available on the Assessment of Student Learning Committee’s internal SharePoint site. The reports include assessment findings, use of results, and continuous improvement initiatives.
-
The Annual MXC Assessment Report is produced each year and shared with the campus community. Its primary purpose is to document the ongoing reflection and improvement efforts taking place across divisions. The report draws on updates and reports submitted by each division to show how programs evaluate student learning and use results to improve teaching, curriculum, and program effectiveness.
Data Analysis
Division faculty and staff collaboratively review and analyze assessment data to identify trends, monitor student learning, and guide continuous improvement efforts.
Responsibility for Improvement
The responsibility for improvement is shared across multiple levels at MXC though faculty are considered the primary owners of student learning assessment.
- Faculty: primary responsibility for evaluating student learning outcomes, interpreting results, and making instructional or curricular changes.
- Program directors and/or department chairs: help organize assessment activities, facilitate discussions, and oversee implementation of improvements.
- Assessment committee: review assessment plans and reports and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Academic administrators (deans, associate deans): provide oversight, resources, and accountability for assessment processes.
- Staff supporting instruction or assessment: may assist with data collection, analysis, reporting, and implementation support.
Public vs Internal Reports
Public reports are available on this site while internal reports are accessible to faculty and staff on the MXC Assessment of Student Learning SharePoint site.
Resource Management
Assessment-related resource management is a shared responsibility at MXC. The Assessment of Student Learning Committee maintains assessment resources, the Office of Accreditation and Compliance oversees accreditation information, and the Institutional Effectiveness Office’s Data Team ensures data integrity and supports data requests.
