Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program

The Basic Nursing Assistants (BNA) program prepares students to work in the healthcare industry as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Students are introduced to the discipline of nursing and the basic approaches to patient care.

Kennedy-King College will offer BNA course offerings on-campus starting Fall 2026. Students are introduced to the discipline of nursing and the basic approaches to patient care. The role of the CNA as an assistant to the licensed nurse and member of the healthcare team is studied and practiced in the classroom, simulation laboratory, and clinical setting. Upon successful completion of all components of the program, the graduate must pass the state’s competency exam to become recognized as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Illinois.

Admissions Requirements                                                                                                                 

  • Enrollment Requirements:
    • Be a City Colleges of Chicago/ Kennedy-King College Student 
      • Attendance to the new student orientation is strongly encouraged
    • Meet Illinois Department of Public Health program enrollment requirements: 
      • Age 16 years or above,
      • Possess a Valid Social Security number or ITIN, and
      • Clear Health Care Worker Background check  
      • Attend Mandatory Program Information Session
  • Academic Requirements:
    • Eligible for English 96 or higher
    • Eligible for Math 98 or higher
      •  Submit official/sealed college transcripts to Kennedy-King College’s Registrar’s Office (required). Students are not required to submit City Colleges of Chicago transcripts. Please allow yourself extra time, as international transcripts take longer to receive.
      •  It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all submitted transcripts have been evaluated and posted by a CCC Registrar (or their designee) on the student’s PeopleSoft academic history.
  • Clinical Requirements:
    • Possess an American Heart Association BLS/CPR Card
    • Submit completed medical examination documentation
    • Submit proof of immunization documentation
    • Submit negative10-panel Urine Drug Screening

​Step 1:

Become a City College of Chicago (CCC) student** at Welcome to City Colleges of Chicago – Apply today!

·       Attend the KKC New Student Orientation (Strongly Recommended), if you have not. Events from May 5 – September 24 › Kennedy-King › – CCC

·       Obtain a CCC student email.

·       Submit all previous college transcripts or take the placement examination 

New students should meet with Admissions to confirm that their application to the college is completed.
Current students can meet with college advising to confirm all program prerequisites are met.

**Adult Education and Early College students: please work with your Transition Specialist.

​Step 2:

Determine Semester of Enrollment

BNA courses are offered during the following terms:

  • Summer: 8 weeks for all students
  • Fall & Spring:
    • Credit and Adult Education Students:1st 8 weeks & 2nd 8 weeks10
    • Early College students: 16 weeks

Step 3:

Attend Mandatory Information Session

  • Attend the mandatory information session by the application’s open date for the semester you plan to enroll.
  • Information sessions are held every Monday and Friday from 9:30 am to 11:30 pm and 2:00 pm-4:00 pm. Days are subject to change.

Step 4:

 Submit Selective Enrollment Application & Required Documentation

Submit the Selective Enrollment Application, all college transcripts, if applicable, and complete the following requirements:

  1. Upload Social Security card (front and back) and completed Healthcare Worker’s Background form (signed and dated within 10 days of anticipated fingerprinting) to the Selective Enrollment portal.
  2. Send submission notification email to the Health Career Coordinator at KKC-BNA@ccc.edu
  3. Download the Live Scan form from the Selective Enrollment Portal (print and bring to fingerprinting site [acceptable listed on form]).
  4. Upload your fingerprinting receipt to your Selective Enrollment application. Your background status will be reviewed to ensure there are no disqualifying criminal records.

Please notes: Completion of Steps 1–4 makes you a viable candidate. At that point, you will receive a CastleBranch voucher to submit your medical documents. All documents will be reviewed for medical compliance.

  1. Create a CastleBranch account. (Information included information session)
  2. Complete and submit all medical requirements to CastleBranch by the posted deadline.

Application Status Definitions:

Students are responsible for monitoring their application status in the Selective Enrollment portal.

Incomplete Applications:

  • Incomplete – Applied: Application submitted
  • Incomplete – Applied – Eligible: Academic requirements met
  • Incomplete – Viable Candidate: Admission requirements met; medical documentation pending

 

Medical Requirements (Submitted via CastleBranch)

MMR Titer – Positive blood test
• Negative results will require repeat vaccination (offer may be contingent upon completion of the series).

Varicella Titer – Positive blood test
• Negative results will require repeat vaccination (offer may be contingent upon completion of the series).

Hepatitis B Titer
• Negative results will require repeat vaccination (offer may be contingent upon completion of the series).

TB Screening – Two-step skin test or QuantiFERON Gold blood test
• Positive results require a chest X-ray and physician clearance letter.

Tdap Vaccine – Documentation within the last 10 years

American Heart Association BLS/CPR Certification – Valid within 2 years
• If completed at KKC or MXC, check CCC spam folder for certification email.

Health InsuranceNOT required; disregard this item in CastleBranch.

Flu Vaccine – Required after September 1
• Offer may be contingent upon timely completion.

BNA Physical Assessment
• Download from BNA program website and bring to your health care provider/physician
• All pages must be signed, dated, and stamped
• Student name, DOB, and MRN required

COVID-19 Vaccination
• One or more doses of 2025–2026 vaccine
• Original vaccination card required
• Booster required if last dose is more than one year old
• Documentation must include patient name, manufacturer, date, and lot number

Drug Screening (10-panel)
• Must be ordered through CastleBranch package (additional cost)
• Must be completed within 60 days of the program’s medical compliance due date window
• Download form, complete testing at LabCorp; results upload automatically

Medical Document Vetting

Medical documents are reviewed on a rolling basis. Seats are offered once all admission and medical compliance requirements are satisfied. Final vetting occurs two weeks prior to the seat offering date, except in cases of low enrollment.

Students should log into CastleBranch to monitor document status. Rejections include explanations; a pending status indicates the document has not yet been reviewed.

Step 5:      

Accept Offer and Attend BNA Program New Student Orientation (NSO)

Complete Applications

  • Complete – Offered: All program admission requirements are met
    •  All students are required to attend an in-person BNA Program New Student Orientation
    •  An email will be sent to the student’s CCC account with acceptance and orientation registration instructions.
  • Complete – Accepted: Student has accepted the offered seat and is eligible to attend Mandatory orientation.
  • Students must accept the offered seat by deadline date AND attend MANDATORY orientation.
    Failure to complete both requirements will result in forfeiture of the seat, which will be offered to another qualified applicant.

Classes
Five program offerings are scheduled each year – two in the spring and fall, one during the summer. Students are responsible for completing the required theory and clinical hours. Theory class is held 3-4 days per week (M-Th) for 5.5 hours each day completed by a scheduled minimum of 40 clinical hours by program end, at an external clinical site.

  • Theory and Lab classes are held at Kennedy King College V-Building (747 west 63rd Street, Chicago, IL 60621)
  • Clinical rotations are held at external clinical sites. Clinical sites are assigned based on availability

Class Times – Theory/Labs: 

  • Morning Classes: 9:00 am -3:00 pm;
  • Afternoon Classes: 3:30 pm-9:30 pm

Clinical Times: 7:00 am -4:00 pm
