Assessment of student learning at Olive-Harvey College is an essential, ongoing, faculty-driven process that ensures alignment with our mission to develop a diverse community of cultural and civic leaders and advance progressive global citizenship. Assessment of Student Learning Governance, Structure, and Process

Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

  • CRITICAL THINKING: Students will be able to solve problems by gathering information and using reasoning skills.

  • HUMAN DIVERSITY: Students will be able to analyze various forms of diversity in the United States and the world. 

  • COMMUNICATION (ORAL & WRITTEN): Students will be able to clearly express their ideas using oral and written language. 

  • CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Students will be able to examine civic engagement and ethical responsibility within the global community. 

  • QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Students will be able to apply basic computational skills to interpret numerical information and arrive at conclusions. 

  • TECHNOLOGICAL LITERACY: Students will be able to utilize technology to enhance learning. 

Process for Developing/Revising ILOs

ILOs are developed through faculty collaboration led by the Assessment Committee and reviewed every six years as part of our assessment cycle. Each academic year, one ILO is formally assessed and that process includes a committee review and revision prior to the assessment year.

Assessment Plans

The Assessment Committee maintains annual assessment plans for ILOs and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs).

Responsible Office

College-wide Assessment is led by the Assessment Committee: an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental group composed of faculty, staff, and administrators. The committee is dedicated to ensuring assessment at OHC is a comprehensive, faculty-driven process focused on improving student learning. To that end, the committee coordinates and supports the collection, review, analysis, and dissemination of data using equitable, ongoing, and iterative processes to ensure the highest standard of learning for all students.

The Assessment Committee is overseen by the Assessment Executive Board which is comprised of the following:

  • Director or Analyst, Research & Planning

Student Involvement

Students participate in assessment through annual surveys, classroom feedback, and collaboration between the Assessment Committee and Student Government Association (SGA).

Technology Infrastructure

OHC Faculty use the learning management system (Brightspace) for curricular assessment. Faculty receive regular training and support on the built-in assessment tools, including Rubrics, Quizzes, and Standards/Outcomes.

Annual assessment reports are published on this site and include evidence of student learning gains and examples of curriculum improvements

Data Analysis

Faculty and staff analyze assessment data collaboratively to identify trends and inform instructional changes.

Responsibility for Improvement

Faculty use assessment findings to guide curricular revisions and student support initiatives.

Public reports are available on this site; internal reports are accessible to faculty and staff via OHC Assessment SharePoint.

Resource Maintenance

The Assessment Committee maintains all assessment resources and ensures data integrity.

Calendar

The Assessment Committee meets on the First Tuesday of each month of the fall and spring semesters. Assessment workshops are held during Faculty Development Week in the fall and spring and throughout the semester. To receive email communication, contact the Assessment Chair.

 

Student Focus

Finding Learning Outcomes

Students can find course learning outcomes on the course syllabus which can be found on the syllabus portal. Program learning outcomes can be found on the department webpages.

Participation in Assessment

Students are invited to participate in assessment activities outside the classroom through annual surveys and open forums.

Formal Mechanism for Input

The Student Government Association (SGA) collaborates with the Assessment Committee and is a formal mechanism for input on assessment activities.
