Getting Support Following a Shooting Incident
Students, faculty, and staff in the Truman College community are impacted when a shooting incident takes place on or near the College. While we may all reach out to provide support to one another, some of us might benefit from additional support from counseling, group discussions, and educating ourselves about common reactions to violence happening on our doorstep.
It’s important to acknowledge your reactions. Common reactions include:
- Feeling concerned about what happened but not distressed
- Having a delayed reaction with stronger feelings surfacing days and even weeks later.
- Needing to talk about the shootings and ask questions about what happened.
- Sleep problems.
- Difficulty concentrating.
- Being especially vigilant about possible dangers even when in a safe place.
- For those close to the shootings, having vivid memories that can be intrusive and upsetting.
- Feeling constantly emotionally sensitive or "numbing out."
What we can all do to support each other:
- Remind each other that our reactions are normal and understandable.
- Give ourselves and each other time to deal with the experiences.
- Support one another in seeking additional support, such as counseling if needed.
- Identifying if oneself or other persons have been traumatically impacted and experiencing, for example, flashbacks, nightmares, crying spells, panic, or constant agitation. Support from a counselor can be helpful for managing feelings and symptoms.
