Assessment Committee Charge:

The Assessment Committee at Truman College is an interdisciplinary group composed of faculty and staff. This committee is dedicated to ensuring that assessment at Truman College is a comprehensive, faculty-driven process focused on improving student learning. To do this, the committee coordinates and supports the collection, review, analysis, and dissemination of data using equitable, ongoing, and iterative processes to ensure the highest standard of learning for all students. 

The Assessment Committee Charge and Bylaws were updated and approved April 2025. 

The Assessment Committee charge aligns with Truman’s mission to deliver high-quality, innovative, affordable, and accessible educational opportunities and services that prepare students for a rapidly changing and diverse global economy.  

Assessment of Student Learning Governance, Structure, and Process

Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

1. Communication – Written & Oral 

Students communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.   

2. Inquiry & Analysis 

Students gather, interpret, and analyze information. 

3. Critical Thinking 

Students demonstrate the ability to critically explore and evaluate issues, ideas, and information before coming to an informed conclusion. 

4. Cultural Responsiveness 

Students exhibit social and ethical responsibility and are aware of global communities. 

5. Quantitative Literacy 

Students consider mathematical models within real-world contexts to make good predictions, judgements, and decisions. 

Approved by the Truman Assessment Committee on Mar 12, 2026 with the understanding that they will be reviewed on a cyclical basis.  

Process for Developing/Revising ILOs 

ILOs are developed through faculty collaboration led by the Assessment Committee and reviewed every five years as part of our assessment cycle. 

Assessment Plans

We have established a calendar to guide our work, so that every academic year we complete the assessment of one outcome, while planning and preparing for an assessment in the year to come.   

Responsible Positions and Committee Membership 

Voting Members 

  1. At least one full-time faculty member from each department appointed by the respective Department Chair 

  1. Vice-chair, Secretary/Archivist, Co-Curricular Liaison, and Data Analyst have voting rights and may serve as department representatives. The Committee Chair only votes in the case of a tie (per Robert’s rules of Order).

Student Involvement 

Students participate in assessment through surveys, classroom feedback, and collaboration between the Assessment Committee and Student Government Association (SGA). 

Technology Infrastructure 

Truman Faculty use different tools for curricular assessment including the learning management system (Brightspace), and Qualtrics. Faculty receive regular training and support on the built-in learning management system assessment tools, including Rubrics, Quizzes, and Standards/Outcomes.

Data Analysis 

Faculty and staff analyze assessment data collaboratively to identify trends and inform instructional changes. 

Responsibility for Improvement 

Faculty use assessment findings to guide curricular revisions and student support initiatives.

Calendar 

The Assessment Committee meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month of the fall and spring semesters. Assessment workshops are held during Faculty Development Week in the fall and spring and throughout the semester. To receive email communication, contact the Assessment Chair. 

Student Focus 

Finding Learning Outcomes 

Students can find course learning outcomes on the course syllabus which can be found on the syllabus portal. Program learning outcomes can be found on the department webpages. 

Participation in Assessment 

Students are invited to participate in assessment activities outside the classroom through surveys and open forums. 

Formal Mechanism for Input 

The Student Government Association (SGA) collaborates with the Assessment Committee and is a formal mechanism for input on assessment activities.
