Take the First Step - Apply Today
There are two ways to enroll in the Adult Education program:
- Fill out the online application. After completing the online application, you will need to visit a City Colleges of Chicago location to take a placement exam and get enrolled.
- Visit one of our college campuses to fill out an paper application.
After you complete your online or paper application, the Adult Education team at the college will help you:
- Take a placement exam to determine your level
- Get enrolled in classes based on your level and availability
Please bring a government-issued ID (e.g. driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and proof of address with you.
Eligibility
- Must live in Illinois
- Social Security number is NOT required
- J1 visas are not permitted
- We accept 16 and 17-year old students, but you must bring a high school release form from your former high school. If you never attended school in the United States, someone in the Adult Education department can help you get the paperwork you need.
Placement Testing
Placement tests are offered to better place you at the appropriate level of ESL or High School Equivalency (GED®) classes. Please call the Adult Education Office at any of our college campuses to register for the placement test as they are offered at set times and locations. The placement test may take up to 3 hours.
Fees
All Adult Education Courses are free for eligible students.
- There is a fee to take the GED® exam of $30/section. There are four sections (total $120)
- City Colleges of Chicago offers a GED® Testing Fee Scholarship for eligible students (up to $70 off the $120 test)
