If you have a passion for the Spanish language and are interested in becoming an educator, the Spanish Education pathway may be right for you. In addition to taking classes in Spanish literature, language, and culture, you will also study topics such as teaching methodology and educational psychology. Spanish teachers generally work with students in the middle or high school grades. An aspiring Spanish teacher who plans to work in public Illinois schools must earn a bachelor’s degree with a major in the Teaching of Spanish from an accredited program and obtain a Professional Educator License with a Secondary Education endorsement in Spanish from the Illinois State Board of Education. The pathway below is ideal for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution to become teachers, or for students interested in working as Teacher Assistants.
