Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute Introduces Program for Spanish Speakers

Chicago’s premier culinary school—located at Kennedy-King College—in January will offer a three-semester Advanced Certificate in Culinary Arts taught completely in Spanish

Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute at Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, will begin to offer a three-semester culinary program, completely in Spanish, starting this January. Students looking to launch a career in food can earn an Advanced Certificate in Culinary Arts.

“City Colleges realizes that there are potential students who would feel more comfortable and thrive in a program taught completely in Spanish, and this offering is one way we are meeting those needs,” said City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Juan Salgado. “With the culinary and hospitality industries booming, especially in Chicago, we are committed to preparing our students to not only land jobs, but to excel at them.”

The Advanced Certificate in Culinary Arts in Spanish will include an introduction to basic English vocabulary in the kitchen. Students who finish the program can also complete an Associate in Culinary Arts (classes for the associate degree are taught only in English).

Washburne Executive Dean Marshall Shafkowitz believes the program is a game changer. “Communication and confidence in the kitchen and in our industry are extremely important,” noted Shafkowitz. “This program will help Spanish speaking students be efficient in how they learn, and that in turn will help them smoothly transition into their career.”

Students who complete the program, which consists of 11 courses over three semesters, will be on their way to jobs as chefs, head cooks, and first-line supervisors. Tuition is based on whether the student is full-time or part-time, and financial aid is available.
