WGN TV: Community Colleges Help Students Save Thousands

6/17/2013 12:00 AM

2013 Harold Washington graduate Ian Dobbins will transfer to Columbia University in New York City in the fall, but he won't have to pay the full cost of a four-year degree at the Ivy League school. That's because during the last two years he attended City Colleges of Chicago, where tuition is very low and most students obtain education grants. Dobbins earned a 4.0 GPA and was awarded a scholarship to attend Columbia.

On Monday, June 17th, Dobbins and Director of Transfer Services and Programs Ellen Goldberg appeared on WGN-TV's "Your Money Matters" segment to talk about what Goldberg calls "a hidden jewel": America's community college system, which cost much less than privater and public four-year schools.
