City Colleges Receives Award for Distinguished Budget Presentation

1/10/2013 4:00 PM

CHICAGO – In recognition of its commitment to the highest principles of government budgeting, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City Colleges of Chicago. The GFOA recognized City Colleges’ current budget as having met all its guidelines for effective budget presentation.

“This award is the highest form of recognition in government budgeting and represents a significant achievement by City Colleges,” said Stephen J. Gauthier, director of the GFOA’s Technical Services Center.

The current budget, approved by City Colleges’ Board of Trustees last July, was the product of an intensive six-month zero-based budgeting process that required all departments to align budget proposals to City Colleges’ ongoing strategic efforts to increase retention and graduation rates, and the economic value of credentials earned at the community college system.

“We are committed to ensuring that every dollar we spend supports student success, and prepares students for further education or a career after graduation,” City Colleges Chancellor Cheryl Hyman said. “The budget reflects our institutional priorities, and it will continue to as we make steady progress toward our goals, benefiting both students and taxpayers.”
