Harold Washington College, which has a College to Careers focus on business, entrepreneurship and professional services, will be launching three new classes in an insurance pathway. College faculty and staff have been working with corporate partners including Aon, Allstate, Country Financial, Kemper, Willis and Zurich, to update the curriculum to ensure it aligns with employers’ needs. The classes are part of an Associate of Arts degree to prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution after graduation.
The updated courses include sales management, office procedures and special topics in technology which covers Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
In sales management, students will learn how to lead a sales team, overcome objections, how to set goals and measure success, different strategies for selling to businesses versus consumers, and the ethics of sales.
The course on office procedures will introduce students to business processes including managing records and projects, performance management and correspondence/reports. This class will include guest lectures to provide students with an idea of what it’s like to work in the different roles in the insurance industry.
In the special topics in technology course, students will learn advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint, two software programs that are vital in many professional industries. At the conclusion of the course students will be prepared for the Microsoft Certifications Exam, specifically Excel77-420 and PPT77-422 certification tests.
All three classes are offered on Mondays/Wednesdays. Office procedures runs from 9:30 a.m. – 10:50 a.m., special topics in technology runs from 2:00 p.m. – 3:20 p.m., and sales management runs from 5:30 p.m. – 6:50 p.m.
