Harold Washington College Hosts Annual Oratorical Festival

2/20/2014 12:00 AM

More than 120 students, staff, faculty and members of the community gathered on Thursday, February 20th, 2014, for the 26th Annual Sydney R. Daniels Black History Month Oratorical Festival. Comedian and Harold Washington College graduate, Kevin Williams returned as the emcee for the event and Eliott Bell directed the HWC student musician group. It was an afternoon of music, oratory, food and community.

Each of the participants presented a 5-7 minute memorized tribute speech about a person of African ancestry (living or dead) who is regarded generally as an outstanding individual. e.g. humanitarian, artist, politician, educator, or scientist integral to the African experience. We are proud of all the participants but the judges were especially impressed with the speech by Robert Moss on Curtis Mayfield. Organizers say his speech was one of the best in the recent history of the festival.

The winners and the person they paid tribute to are:
  • 1st Place:          Robert Moss        Curtis Mayfield
  • 2nd Place:         Janjira Jenkins    Mamie Till-Mobley
  • 3rd Place:          Jason Monsour    Redd Foxx
  • 4th Place:          Sarah Tusing        Lena Horne
  • 5th Place:          Edgar Camarillo    Tupac
  • 6th Place:          Naila Opiangah    Nelson Mandela

Jenny Armendarez, Harold Washington College faculty member and coordinator of the festival, with 1st place winner Robert Moss.
