Olive-Harvey College Expands Diesel Training Opportunities for Its Students

10/23/2014 12:00 AM

Students seeking future certification as diesel technicians at Olive-Harvey College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, will have three new vehicles to use in preparing for careers in the fast-growing TDL (transportation, distribution, and logistics) field. Today, Navistar donated an IC Bus™ AC Series shuttle bus and two trucks—an International® TerraStar® that’s used for a variety of applications, including pickup and delivery, landscaping, construction and disaster recovery; and an International WorkStar ®that’s used in heavy applications in the construction, emergency, waste and utility industries. Olive-Harvey College is City Colleges’ College to Careers hub for TDL education, preparing students for the 110,000 TDL jobs coming to the Chicago region over the next decade.

“We’re in the process of launching a new Diesel Technology Program, and these vehicles will be incorporated into those courses,” said Angelia Millender, President of Olive-Harvey College.  “Navistar has partnered with us through the College to Careers initiative, providing us with powerful insight into the skills our students will need to be successful in the field and helping us to identify the tools and equipment that will ensure our students are ready to hit the ground running on the first day of work.”

"We are excited to provide these vehicles to Olive-Harvey College so students can develop the hands-on experience needed to pursue high-demand career opportunities in the transportation industry," said Jim Spangler, Navistar Vice President – Corporate Affairs. "Our customers and dealers are acutely aware of our nation's chronic shortage of qualified diesel technicians, and partnering with City Colleges of Chicago to help young people land productive, good-paying jobs is something we are very proud of at Navistar."

Olive-Harvey College is helping to meet demand in the TDL industry by preparing Chicagoans for the jobs of today and tomorrow. It is taking the lead on developing the next pipeline of diesel technicians, long-haul and tractor-trailer drivers, supply chain managers, warehousing and inventory professionals, freight forwarders and logistics personnel. The aim is to arm students with relevant certificates and degrees that will benefit their long-term career success.

In October 2013, Olive-Harvey College broke ground on a nearly $45 million TDL Center slated to open in 2015. The 103,000 square feet facility will include automotive and diesel engine laboratories, an engine dynamometer, classrooms, simulated driving facilities, a testing center, vehicle bays, and a working warehouse.
