African American Studies

Jacqueline Johnson

Chair

The department offers students the opportunity to engage in intellectual work and exchange that will give them a foundation in the core ideas, concepts, theories, origins, scope, and relevance of the discipline of African American Studies. African American Studies uses an interdisciplinary approach to analyze the history, culture, perspectives, and conditions of people of African descent in Africa and the African Diaspora, to help students to develop a critical appreciation of human diversity and its contribution to understanding the human experience.

The department prepares students to be responsible global citizens, empowers them to serve their communities, and provides a strong academic foundation for transfer to a four-year college or university.
