To cap a semester-long study of the work of contemporary artists such as Banksy, Shepherd Fairey, Jenny Holzer and Redmoon Theater, 21 students from Malcolm X College’s Art 131 class will use their campus as canvas, projecting their self-portrait artwork onto the side of the school’s building on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 8-9 P.M. The work, termed The Final Project, investigates humans’ relationships with their urban surroundings as students inscribe a sense of self and identity onto the building. Students Andre Gooch Jr., Ashley Holman, Shante Miller, Malcolm Shepherd and Jessica Williams also will deliver poetry and vocal performances as part of the installation, transforming Malcolm X College into a medium for creativity. The piece is the students’ final project for Adjunct Professor Rachel Slotnick.
