City Colleges of Chicago Student-Athlete Earns Region IV Honor
Malcolm X College’s Will Martinez Selected as Region IV Player of the Week
CHICAGO – Sophomore guard Will Martinez of the Malcolm X College men’s basketball team was chosen as the Region IV Player of the Week on Dec. 2.
In a pair of games at the Cincinnati State Technical and Community College Tournament on Nov. 29-30, Martinez totaled 48 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals. He converted 18 of his 31 shots from the field (58 percent), including 7-of-14 attempts from three-point range, as well as 5-of-6 free throws.
Martinez, a native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, had 27 points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal in a 102-100 setback to Lansing Community College (Mich.) in the tournament opener. He followed that effort with 21 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals in Malcolm X’s 116-89 victory over Moraine Valley Community College.
Martinez is ranked 25th nationally in NJCAA Division I with a 21.0 points-per-game scoring average. He is also averaging 5.0 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
In November, Martinez’s teammate, sophomore forward Jovany Austin, earned the Region IV Player of the Week twice and NJCAA Division I Basketball Player of the Week. Malcolm X College, ranked second among seven teams in the Region IV Division I coaches’ poll, has a 5-2 record this season.
Martinez is pursuing an associate degree in general studies.
