Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program
Rhonda Phillips, MSN, CNS, RN
Associate Dean of Nursing

The eight-week Basic Nursing Assistants (BNA) program prepares students to work in the healthcare industry as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Students are introduced to the discipline of nursing and the basic approaches to patient care.  Five programs are offered each year at WSLC and Malcolm X College – two in the spring and fall and one during the summer. Students complete 120 hours of theory and skill practice on-campus.  Theory classes are held 3-4 days per week (M-Th) for 6.5 hours each day. 40 clinical hours are completed between weeks 6 and 8.  The clinical hours are completed within 5-8 hour days.

Upon successful completion of all components of the program, the graduate must pass the State of Illinois          Competency Examination to become recognized as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
Completion of a BNA Program and certification as a CNA are pre-requisite requirements for admission into the AAS Nursing Degree Program at Malcolm X College.
